The Nitty Gritty:
Pour-in-Place
Our wise mentors passed down one of the more traditional methods of pouring concrete that we are still proud to use today: the Pour-in-Place. This process requires our crew to physically build the countertop form, pour cement, and do all of the necessary steps to finish and seal the countertops at the jobsite. This process let’s us roll up our sleeves, actually we probably weren’t wearing any, and start building a countertop form to pour cement in. Using this method we can finish the project on the jobsite - which is good because then you can look at our beautiful faces longer. The mess this process can make is all worth it to have a large, seamless countertop at the end of the day.
Precast
If you wish to choose this road of fabrication, we will come on over, break out our toolbox, yardstick, notepads and get to work! We survey the space with a keen eye; take all the necessary measurements and then head back to our shop where we begin construction. Some customers prefer this method because we spend minimal time on the jobsite. So for those who use their space for everyday business, this solution may be helpful. If you’ve got the mother of all countertops – the triple XL monster – we can build multiple sections and seam them together during installation.
GFRC
GFRC (glass fiber reinforced concrete) is a new school method of concrete countertop manufacturing that will leave Siegfried & Roy asking, “How is that possible?” This process is manufactured precast, but because of the cement mix design, we are able to create thin, lightweight countertops that have the appearance of very large pieces.Like any good recipe, the secret is in the sauce. Our GFRC countertops weigh anywhere from 30%-70% lighter than our traditional mix and have more tensile and compressive strength to go with it. Glass fiber reinforced concrete countertops are the majority of our projects, and something we take great pride in doing for our customers.
Concrete
You may be thinking, “I love my countertop! It serves all my purposes!” And that is fine.No judgments. But even the best things need a makeover sometimes. Whether you have formica, tile, stone, granite or even wood, by applying multiple thin layers of our concrete overlay, we are able to take your countertop from good, to absolutely freaking fantastic. I love my 1967 Mustang too, but trust me I’ve fixed the engine, got a new paint job and bought new tires a few times. Don’t let your countertops go another day just being ordinary.
If you think you’re on the brink of hating your sink – we are the missing link.We mold concrete sinks to fit any size room or bathroom. We take pride in turning your boring sink into something you’re proud to show guests. Alternative Constructors builds every sink using fiberglass and rubber, each with their own custom features.Like we do with all our custom sinks, your mold will go in our archives for future design reference. Once complete we will deliver the sink on site and prepare for installation.
Concrete Shower Wrap
We certainly don’t like to brag, but we have to give ourselves a little pat on the back creating the concrete shower wrap. “My gosh, what is a concrete shower wrap,” you ask.Oh, its just a grout free shower wrap complete with a waterproof system that rests right on top of your existing tile or durock – no big deal. If you want a new look to your shower that is for sure one-of-a-kind – this option is for you.
Precast Shower Panels
Precast showers panels are awesome. We measure all the dimensions on-site and build wall panels the same exact size of your space. After fabrication, we deliver and install on-site - grouting only the corners. We have received reports that customers water bills have become increasingly high, simply because they love their new shower so much they don’t want to get out. As an environmentally friendly company, we promise to make your shower awesome, if you promise to save some water for the fish!
Every wood floor tells a story and we are the authors that create your happy ending. Adding or touching up a wood floor gives your space the feeling of warmth and comfort. Most people who have lived with wood floors never want to go back. Just how an author sits down to plan out every angle of a story they are about to write, we take our time to figure out every finite detail of what our customers wish to see. We took a trip up to the Carolina’s where we met with old school wood workers to shadow and learn trade secrets. Our passion and determination to achieve mastery allows us to accomplish any idea. Especially the ones that brought upon 4am studio nights and premature hair loss. We challenge you, to challenge us.
The Nitty Gritty:
NAIL DOWN
Nail down installations allow us to consistently refinish the surface, never allowing a “sour” phase to happen. We also have to come in and install a layer of plywood first for the actual wood floor to be nailed into – that’s wood on wood. This will also raise your floor a few inches as well, which can be awesome if you’ve ever dreamed of waking up one day a few inches taller.
Glue Down
Glue Down is another option that may excite your little feet. Per customer request we will come to your space and install a waterproof and soundproof barrier before even laying down a piece of wood. Now you can rest assure that your floor is safe through any circumstance, like a typhoon or a really loud karaoke party. After that is complete we will take a deep breath, look each other in the eye, high five and get ready for some tedious wood floor installation! Every plank is glued down one by one to ensure quality and proper care for your new floor.
Floating
Another option for your new wood floor would be our floating system. No, unfortunately we don’t wave a magic wand and chant so your floor rises off the ground– even though that would be awesome. This method is unique because it actually involves no nails, glue, or anything really. This is the best option to stand up against the Florida humidity. We simply measure out your space and begin to interlock each wood plank to create a solid pattern. This is great for customers who do not want to raise their floor height, think they may change their floors in the future or are on a tighter budget.
Sanding
Sanding may sound like a simple process, and perhaps you have even thought about doing it yourself to save some money. Every piece of wood is sensitive to the type of sandpaper used, so it is important that the correct sanding patterns and techniques are used. In other words, we’re saying hire the pro’s. We sand to remove all of the scratches with a mandatory dust-free sanding system so your allergies don’t act up. To keep our jobs efficient and the environment clean we have taken the liberty of not cutting corners too and buying the best equipment possible. We complete the sanding process by applying wood filler and finish off with a final sand in preparation for color or finishing.
Staining
Staining your hardwood floor is apart of the refinishing process where we come and spill stuff everywhere to make cool stuff on your fancy floor. Kidding. If you haven’t noticed, we also offer witty sarcasm free of charge. Staining really revitalizes your hardwood bringing back the elegance and richness it once had from days of yore. It also helps your floors weather years of guests, children, pets and furniture that will no doubt cause a few chinks in the armor. Some flooring companies will show you an example of staining colors on a piece of paper, or their website. Now I ask you, if you were ordering a new car and wanted to see how a color looked on it, would you be OK with the dealership drawing that on a piece of paper for you? Exactly. We will come to you and apply it on your floor so you can see exactly what it looks like and decide from there. We want you to see the true vitalization of what the stain will look like when applied to your floor.
Finishing
We understand that you will be eager to get back into your space and see your amazing new floors. For this reason we have chosen non-flammable, odorless products guaranteeing a safe return home as soon as the job is finished. Our craftsmen buff between every coat to make sure that everything on the surface is removed for the next step. Every finish is available in satin, semi-gloss or gloss. That’s right folks – options.
Lime and marble plasters have been used for thousands of years to decorate the walls of palaces, royal tombs and great monuments throughout the world. There’s a great chance if you are reading this, you probably don’t live in a palace or need a royal tomb decorated – and if you do just stop reading and call us immediately. Despite their ancient history, lime and marble are still widely respected and used today to finish homes and buildings around the world. We spent years as young padawans learning techniques for both lime and marble from our mentors. It is about as Karate Kid as it sounds, grasshopper. Our plaster recipes consist of crushed marble, aged lime and natural pigments. Sounds so good you wanna eat it, right? We do not recommend this as a snack. Synonymous with traditional stucco and plaster used around the globe for ages, our plaster finishes are crafted without volatile organic compounds (VOCs), making them non-toxic and free of harmful chemicals.
The Nitty Gritty:
MARMORINO
Marmorino is a natural lime based plaster that is made with fine sand, making it more texture prone and thicker than the less-sanded Veneziano. It can be applied with subtle color variation, texture or with more polish and depth. Enough with the fancy talk, if you want a great finish with added texture - this is perfect for you.
Veneziano
Veneziano is a natural traditional lime based plaster used on interiors, some exteriors and shower stalls. While Marmorino is more like crunchy peanut butter, this is smooth and creamy containing no sand. It should be applied in multiple thin coats (like the perfect peanut butter and jelly sandwich) creating either a subtle flat finish, or a highly polished surface by burnishing.
Stucco
Stucco is a natural product used on exteriors, interiors and shower stalls that can be burnished to a soft natural variation of color and depth. It contains more aggregate than Marmorino. You probably just said, “What is aggregate?”Its just a technical term that lets you know you are adding more ingredients to our stucco recipe, giving it even more texture, thickness and durability. We can order Stucco for your project in a tinted version or plain white.
Lime Washing
Lime washing is a technique where we take a basket of limes and place them under a spigot of running water to thoroughly clean them before making guacamole. That last statement may have been totally fabricated (even though now we are a little hungry). Lime washing is really an excellent traditional way to enhance or change color of Marmorino or Stucco. It gives the plaster more dramatic and softer tones, allowing the color and feel to come to life.
Some of our best-handcrafted work comes from reclaimed wood that we’ve most likely salvaged from your great grandma’s pig farm in Pennsylvania. You know that old heap of wood you think is dirty, useless and fading away. We kind of love that stuff. Big time. Reclaimed wood has become an integral part of many projects that we work on. These pieces give off an energythat cannot be duplicated by any other material, making them not only extremely awesome for usto build --but even more rewarding for our customer to have. Furniture, cabinetry, mantels, flooring, pergolas and full walls are just a few great opportunities to incorporate reclaimed wood. We take pride in using sustainable, recycled materials that make your space unique and personal.
